ARTISANS WILL HELP THE G & J INDUSTRY SURVIVE

Ganjam has always played an integral role in jewellery crafts. Since we make handmade jewellery in-house, our relationship with artisans is very strong and we work closely with them. Craftspeople are an extraordinary bunch of people and I think in the long run, they will help the gem and jewellery industry survive, and not the other way round.

We need to see how different crafts can contribute to the industry For us, participating in such endeavours is not new and we have partnered with the World Crafts Council for a long time and worked on several projects together.

For this project with the GJEPC, we chose to work with Tarkashi (fine silver filigree work) because Orissa has been associated with the art for a long time. Also, Ganjam has its roots in Orissa, and this was one way we could pay tribute to our ancestry. More importantly, we chose the craft because I knew that it had the potential to be crafted in three-dimensional forms.

As a child, I had witnessed Tarkashi being done with thin gold wires. But artisans have been using silver for a very long time to design artefacts and jewellery in Tarkashi. So, it was important for us to bring this art form back to contemporary mode. There were some problems we faced. To begin with, the whole craft is embedded in the culture of Orissa. The favourite and recurring motifs are inspired from the mythological scenes related to Lord Krishna. The artisans had never worked with gold before so it took a while for our designer to break the ice and get things done. Fortunately, our designer is from Orissa and she speaks the local language. That made the ride a bit smooth.

In our rendition of Tarkashi in plain gold, we tried to be as faithful to the craft as possible by taking two directions in our collections. We used the essence of the craft — in terms of its curvatures, bends, working methods, but incorporated our own spirit by way of introducing contemporary three-dimensional motifs. At Ganjam, we work with gold, but use a lot of coloured gemstones and diamonds in it. This is one of the few times we have worked with plain gold and have taken it to a different level.
Honestly I am thrilled with the way the pieces have shaped up. I am quite sure that our customers, too, will appreciate them, but I cannot completely vouch for it till the products hit the shelves. As for its commercial viability, when the product comes on the shelves, it should speak for itself, and be able to stand the test on its face value alone. It will take time to popularise the products, but we are enjoying the process. It is a lifetime commitment for us.
